Traveling to Barbados With the Millennial Travel Forum
When travel author and guru Joe Pike told me he was holding the first Millennial Travel Forum in Barbados—and subsequently invited me there—I thought to myself, “Hell yeah!” Once the initial excitement had worn off, I thought, “Hell yeah!” again and couldn’t sleep that night. I can tell you before you read any further, that everything about traveling to Barbados was fantastic. If you haven’t been, it’s time to make plans and mark your calendar.
Getting to be a part of this inaugural forum with 15 of the coolest travel agents I’ve ever met was amazing. Doing a live forum with them on Facebook was an honor. And hanging out with them throughout this trip was a blast. I hope to see every one of them again!
The Food and Rum
I’m saying it and not holding back—the best food I’ve ever had was when I was traveling to Barbados. The welcome dinner at Elegant Hotel’s restaurant, Tapestry, was delicious—so much so, I had to mention the pork belly live on Facebook. La Cabane, a bar/restaurant at Batts Rock beach, has one of the best dining atmospheres I’ve ever experienced. The ocean view from the Catch 22 restaurant is unbeatable, and they are experts at preparing lionfish.
Before you ask, yes, the rum is as good as they say it is. The locals love to serve it to you as a tasty punch. But you don’t need to cover up this island rum, it’s delicious and smooth all on its own. Remember when Jack Sparrow asks where all the rum has gone? Well, Jack, it’s in my belly!
We took a trip to the 1600’s St. Nicholas Abbey, where they had to restrain me, or else they’d run out of rum. But seriously, the great house’s Jacobean style is some of the finest architecture I’ve seen. The surrounding estate is full of lush tropical gullies, herb gardens and jaw-dropping historical sites.
The Fun
You really can do a lot when traveling to Barbados. You can stay at a hotel by the beach, rum punch in hand and the next second decide to hop on a jet-ski. Really, all you need to do is wave at one of the jet-ski rentals patrolling the area and they’ll come right up to the beach. The calm, warm, waters give you plenty of chances to see the curious marine life swimming all around too.
There’s plenty of fun away from the beach too. Barbados has a circuit-racing facility called Bushy Park Barbados where you can take straightaways going 40 – 50 mph. This might not sound fast, but when you’re less than two inches from the ground, everything is ripping past you.
Make sure you do not leave Barbados without visiting Oistins, the most happening fish fry in the world. They hold this event every Friday and the area is teeming with local fish vendors. There is live music, so don’t forget your dancing shoes, or sit back and enjoy watching it happen all around you.
