The New Year started with a sandwich.
A good sandwich. Gluten-free bread, obviously. An egg from our chickens in Utah and imported Irish cheddar. We hauled this cheese and eggs a thousand miles because Trisha didn’t know when we could get good cheese and eggs again. I’m glad we brought them.
We’ve been in Illinois visiting family for the holidays, but our time is up, and today was a driving day. I wanted one fantastic meal before hitting the road and eating gas station goodies again. The sandwich was an exceptional choice.
Today’s in-car cabin service included: beef jerky, rice cakes, French fries, lattes, and Cheetos. The Great American diet on the Great American Road Trip.
We got to our first hotel and settled in…
…settled in after I made the journey up the road seeking gas station wine. It was our best option. Although I briefly considered downloading the Drizly app, which will apparently deliver alcohol directly to you within an hour or so.
An hour was too long. It was snowing all day, and Trisha was driving. I needed the wine to calm my nerves now. I would have helped drive, but Trisha was not going to let go of that wheel. Her truck has 4-wheel drive, and as soon as it started snowing, Trisha’s white knuckles never let go.
I’m honestly not sure if she was thrilled or terrified. Possibly both. All I know is that I was not allowed to drive, and she has permanent grooves on her steering wheel.
The whole day’s drive was snow-covered and windy.
It was occasionally a full-on whiteout windstorm. Periodically, trucks and trailers were on the sides of the road or in the median. Several trailers were turned over onto their sides. Some were upside down, and for some strange reason, there were numerous enclosed trailers that had burst open, revealing other cars inside. Maybe they were from a car show, maybe it was a glitch in the matrix. All I know is that the pattern repeated.
It was only 3 degrees outside for most of our journey. It’s currently a balmy 7 degrees outside the hotel.
Three weeks ago, we were in Florida, where it was 75 degrees and sunny!
I’m working on my resolutions tonight.
This year, I’m resolving to spend more time in warm weather. I’m resolving to spend a lot more time outdoors…also in warm weather.
After two years of very little travel, and one too many storm loads of snow, I think a few active trips to sunny places in the winter sounds like just the ticket.
By the way, if you are thinking of making travel resolutions this year, HE Travel has launched the January Customer Appreciation event. Everything on the entire calendar is on sale.
Also, as of 2022, HE Travel has been in business for 50 years. Surprise!! Does anyone want to celebrate by traveling somewhere? We have a few ideas.
