We’re entering the third month of our season in Salt Lake City.
We’re still here for a couple of months more. I was worried that I would be forced to go back to Florida early, to deal with a hurricane flood, caused when Hurricane Debby descended on the Big Bend region this last week. The storm brought us a large tidal surge, but luckily the water came up shy about 3 inches below our floorboards. Largely undamaged.
The yard is a different story, it took quite the messy beating. Thankfully, I’ve made good friends with several of the locals, and my friend Nancy took pictures, and is now cleaning up the debris in the yard for us. Thank goodness for neighbors and friends down there.
Back in Utah, I’ve been making efficient use of my time,
clearing out old backlogs of activities, and to-dos. I’ve been so busy with home renovations and repeatedly moving, that several of my more artistic goals have taken a back burner as of late. Music, stand-up comedy, house parties and so much more.
To try and improve that situation,
I threw a family party last Friday night in my backyard. We had several family members in town, and even one who had traveled all the way from Spain. It was great seeing everyone, and it made me want to get back to throwing more house parties.
I’ve spent a significant portion of this month making up for lost time.
I’m in my studio a little bit everyday now, brushing up on my guitar skills or watching my old comedy tapes. In fact, I’m in my studio right now, writing Zachary’s Notes for August.
My wife Trisha pointed out to me that one of my old comedy buddies,
Rodney Norman, was playing a show at Wiseguys Comedy Club in downtown Salt Lake City. We bought tickets to his show, so we could have some fun, some laughs and to get a chance to catch up with my old friend. He’s become a lot more popular over the years and has now become progressively more funny. Lots of lighthearted and relatively clean jokes, as well.
Going to Rodney’s show, and watching my old tapes, was quite entertaining. It’s been almost 20 years since I last went on the stage as a comedian. I found myself becoming quite nostalgic about it, and really missing having that regular stage time. I told him as much.
Turns out they now hold open mics on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
I figure I’ll start working on some new comedy bits and resurrect some of my old material. In a few weeks, I’ll have a new comedy set list put together, and practiced in front of the mirror. I am excited about trying again. I think I’ll rewatch Jerry Seinfeld’s movie The Comedian. It’s an epic story about him rekindling his stage comedy career after quitting his beloved sitcom also called Seinfeld. His old material wasn’t relevant to him anymore, so he writes all new material. In his first several appearances, he bombs a lot. I wonder what I’ll go through.
I currently travel the world running tours and developing our latest tour products, so I’m used to being on the road. It would be fun to add a few comedy touring gigs into the mix again.
